Development of a novel simulator for modelling underground hydrogen and gas mixture storage

Underground hydrogen storage can store grid-scale energy for balancing both short-term and long-term inter-seasonal supply demand. However, there is no numerical simulator which dedicated to the design optimisation of such technology at grid scale. This study develops novel simulation capabilities GPSFLOW (General Purpose Subsurface Flow Simulator) modelling gas mixture (e.g., H2–CO2–CH4–N2) in cavern, deep saline aquifers depleted fields. The accuracy verified by comparisons against National Institute Standard Technology (NIST) online thermophysical database reported lab experiments, over a range temperatures from 20 200 °C pressure up 1000 bar. benchmarked an existing model pure H2 synthetic aquifer. Several underground scenarios including salt injection into CH4-saturated aquifer experiment, field using CO2 as cushion are used test GPSFLOW's capability. results show that offers robust tool scale on multiple parallel computing platforms.
